After Kirra Long shoved her laptop into a desk drawer, using a tiny key to lock a latch beside the handle, she stood and straightened her jacket. A clank reverberated through LaPierre Foundation’s halls and between the cracks of her closed office door. She paused, straining to catch another sound.

Stark silence was her only response.

She shrugged and patted her hair. It was probably the cleaning crew dropping a mop or something.

Slinging her designer bag over her shoulder, Kira checked the time on her diamond-studded watch. It was already after ten. Since Monique’s death, she’d clocked out late every night, but not because she was doing any extra work. Even before Monique’s untimely demise, Kira was the one holding the LaPierre Foundation and its activities together.

Her problem was the little fires that continued to pop up again and again. The ones that refused to fade away. Now that the police were sticking their noses into the foundation’s business, she was about to lose her mind.

Speaking of which, that’s one fire I need to put out. Immediately.

She retrieved her phone from her shoulder bag and dialed a number. The call rang six times before someone picked up. She kept her voice sharp and firm. “We have a problem. The police were here today, asking a lot of questions.”

“What did you tell them?”

She flipped the light switch and locked her office door behind her. “Are you kidding? I’m not some newbie. I didn’t tell them a thing.” The tapping of her heels echoed off the walls as she walked through the empty lobby and out the building doors.

Outside, the warm and sticky night greeted her. The barest of breezes wisped around her and vanished back into the darkness. She strode along the sidewalk leading to the parking garage behind the building while sweat leaked from her pores. With her free hand, she fanned her face.

“What did they ask?”

She ignored the question. “I’m telling you, it’s under control. At least for now. Thanks to me. I didn’t share any information with them about our clients, but they threatened to get a warrant.” Her phone jiggled against her cheek with each step she took.

A muffled expletive burst from the receiver.

Kira grimaced, holding the device away from her ear.

Rude.

She didn’t appreciate being cursed at like this problem was hers and hers alone. If this was how it was going to be when the chips were down, she was done being the point of contact on this.

No more Ms. Nice Girl.

“Look, if they come back with a warrant, they’ll have carte blanche access to the files. That’s a problem for you, me, and everyone else. You get that, right? If you want to prevent that from happening, you need to do whatever it takes to get that warrant request squashed. Capisce?”

“Me? What exactly do you think I can do? I’m…”

Kira dragged her hand across her sweaty face as the tirade continued. She was over the complaints. The failures.

You’d think I’m the only one with a stake in this.
